Collection: Juneteenth Madonna

ARTIST: Br. Mickey McGrath, OSFS

ARTWORK NARRATIVE:

Mary is shown with her head bowed and her arms raised in praise as she contemplates her Son Jesus breaking the chains of slavery while standing in the healing waters of a Deep River. Jesus’ halo is a sunflower rising above the cotton fields behind Him.

Mary’s body is draped in a quilt of many diverse colors and patterns. Mother and Son are wrapped in a womb-like shape outlined in pink, the symbolic liturgical color of Gaudete Sunday, the “Let us rejoice” day of the Advent season.
