Nuestra Señora del Rosario is one of the titles or advocations of the Blessed Virgin Mary, mother of Christ. According to pious legend the Virgin appeared to St. Dominic, founder of the Dominican Order, and gave him the rosary as a form of contemplative prayer. The Dominicans spread the use of the rosary throughout Europe in their efforts to combat heresy. Nuestra Señora del Rosario is usually shown crowned, dressed in robes of blue and white or blue and red, holding the Christ Child and extending a rosary.
