Back in 1798, fearing the spread of Catholicism in Vietnam, the emperor made it against the law to practice the faith. Catholics were hunted down and killed if they were caught. Some people ran into the rain forest of La Vang to hide. Many became very ill in the jungle, but they gathered every night at the base of a tree to pray the rosary. One night Mary appeared in the branches of the tree in traditional Vietnamese dress, holding the baby Jesus in her arms with angels on either side of her.
