Through his prophetic teaching, writing, and editing, Dominican scholar and ecumenist Yves Congar developed and tirelessly promoted much of the theology that laid the groundwork for the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. His ideas on church unity and on the role of the laity were groundbreaking and difficult to accept by the institutional church; in fact he was silenced by Rome for nearly fifteen years. But then Saint John XXIII named him to the preparatory theological commission for the Council. Eventually his work was integrated into the most important documents of Vatican II.
