The original painting of this Polish Madonna was enshrined in its own church in Constantinople by the Emperor Constantine. There it was carried around the city to frighten off Saracen invaders. The painting then made its way to Russia for 500 years and then to Poland where it was pierced by an arrow from attackers. It finally ended up in the city of Czestochowa, it hangs in the church of the Assumption where it has been guarded by the Pauline fathers for 600 years. In 1430, Hussites stormed the church and tried to steal the painting. They put it in their wagon, but the horses refused to move. The attackers threw the picture to the ground and one of them drew his sword and put two slashes on Our Lady's cheek. While going for a third slash, he had a seizure and died on the spot. Many attempts to fix the scars from the two slashes and the earlier arrow piercing have failed as the marks always reappear. Our Lady of Czestochowa was acclaimed Queen of Poland and many miracles over the centuries have given the people a deep love for their “Black Madonna” whose face and hands have darkened from numerous candles over the years lit by her faithful children to honor her.
Her feast day is August 26.
