Collection: Julie Lonneman

Julie Lonneman, fine artist and freelance illustrator, currently divides her time between Bellingham, Washington, and Cincinnati, Ohio. Her illustrations on themes of spirituality and social justice have appeared in books and magazines published around the globe. In her illustration career, Julie created 85 saints' portraits for The University of Notre Dame as well as provided the artwork for their Newman Hymnal. She was commissioned by Liturgical Press to illustrate a three-year cycle of Sunday readings for Living Liturgy. Julie authored Clip Art for Sundays and Solemnities, published by Liturgy Training Publications in 2003, and they chose her to illustrate the 2011 Year of Grace calendar. Julie has created an art library of over 260 fresh and engaging lectionary-based images for Augsburg Fortress Press and in 2011 illustrated the Lutheran Study Bible. Julie is a regular contributor to the monthly ecumenical worship resource Celebration, and for eight years supplied their weekly Sunday graphics.

Julie acknowledges many influences, from tribal, folk, and medieval art to the work of twentieth-century artists Käthe Kollwitz, Fritz Eichenberg and Franklin Carmichael, and of contemporary liturgical artist Steve Erspamer, SM. Julie is particularly grateful for the insights gleaned from her 25 years of membership in New Jerusalem, a Catholic intentional lay community founded in the 1970's by Richard Rohr, OFM. His teaching helped her to form the understanding of scripture that underlies her work.

It was also at New Jerusalem that Julie met her husband, Bill, currently an assistant professor of nursing at Western Washington University. They have two wonderful daughters, born in 1984 and 1987, and are happily adjusting to being grandparents.
