ARTWORK NARRATIVE:

I can’t think of a better way to celebrate Earth Day than to highlight some saints from the past whose entire lives focused on love and respect for Creation. Each of the great women and one man from days long past offer us a timeless message that we are here to co-operate with God’s creation – to honor and respect it, not exploit it or abuse it – because God is incarnate in nature.

Saints Brigid of Ireland, Hildegard of Bingen, and Kateri Tekakwitha. None of these three great women was a mother herself, but each of them points to the eternal presence of God in Mother Earth.

And did you know that Pope Benedict, who canonized Kateri Tekakwitha and Hildegard of Bingen – and named her a doctor of the church – was called the Green Pope because of his love for creation and his concern for its destruction?

Creator, God, help us to see your presence in the beauty that surrounds us.
