Little is known of the life of St. Andrei, one of the geniuses in the world of art, and the patron saint of iconographers. He was a student of Byzantine master Theophanes the Greek. It is believed that Andrei’s family was from the Moscow princedom and that his family may have been artisans, as the name comes from the word ‘rubel’ which is a tool for processing leather. Legend describes him as a shy, calm person whose focus was divine service, meditation and icon painting. He is said to have had visions. His only extant murals survive at the Assumption Cathedral in Vladimir and show evidence of his progression from the Byzantine style to what became the Golden Age in Russian icon painting. The heightened color scale and gracious curved linear elements defined the difference between the new and old.
As with all reformers, his deviation with the past was challenged by many who followed the canons. It was at this time that he painted his famous Trinity icon, which is shown, unfinished, in the background of this icon of St. Andrei. The Trinity icon is possibly the most reproduced icon in the world. It is the standard by which all other iconographers measure their work. Henry Nouwen found the icon a holy place to enter and stay within, and offered us a “glimpse of the house of perfect love.” Rublev died in 1430, and is buried where he worked and lived at Savior-Andronikov Monastery in Moscow. Many testified to the sanctity of his life but his icons are the true testament.
This icon is offered to all artists, that they may have strength in their efforts to follow their calling.
His feast day is July 4.
