Saint Catherine Laboure, a young nun in France was visited by Mary in 1830. Our Lady appeared with outstretched hands from which streamed rays of light which she said represented the graces God had given her to bestow on those who ask. She said that many graces go unused because people do not ask for them. She stood in this position as words appeared around her saying “O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.” She asked Catherine to have medals made in that image and pass them around to everyone. Catherine did just that and so many miracles happened and so many graces were received that the medal became known as the “Miraculous Medal.” This image of Mary is called Our Lady of Grace. Today, nearly two hundred years later a miraculous medal is a very common Catholic sacramental worn by millions all over the world.
