Joan of Arc, a French farm girl, heard voices and saw visions of Saints Michael, Catherine and Margaret. They told her God wanted her to lead an army into battle, restore the crown to its rightful heir and drive the English from France. That sounds insane and amazing, but she did it. A seventeen year old girl convinced French forces that she was sent from God to help them. That alone speaks of her incredible courage and genuineness. Then, she cut her hair and dressed as a man, (just to avoid being molested by her own army) and donned armor and a sword. She marched into battle under a banner of Jesus and Mary and achieved in a week what the military couldn't. Joan stood by Charles VII as he was crowned. She was captured by rival Frenchmen and sold to the English. She endured horrible prison conditions, and a grossly unfair trail. At one point they talked her into recanting by making her doubt herself.
Joan poured out her heart to God in repentance. He comforted her and infused her soul with even more strength to endure what was to happen next. The court found her guilty of heresy, and she was condemned to be burned at the stake. As the flames were lit, Joan didn't look down, but asked to have a cross held up before her. She kept her eyes open and focused on that cross until her very last breath. There is no limit to what God can do with a soul who trusts in Him completely. If you can ignore the flames at your feet and raise your eyes to heaven, nothing is impossible.
Her feast day is May 30.
