Stanislaus, bishop of Krakow, spoke truth to power and was martyred for it. In 1079, Stanislaus excommunicated King Boleslaus II for his immoral personal life and public tyranny. In response the king ordered his soldiers to kill the bishop. According to tradition, when the royal guards hesitated to kill Stanislaus, whom they had trapped in a chapel, the king entered the sanctuary and murdered Stanislaus himself by hacking him to pieces.
In 1088, the body of Stanislaus was buried in the cathedral that was renamed for him. Many centuries later, in 1964, Karol Wojtyla, who was to become Pope John Paul II, was installed as one of Stanislaus’ successors in that same cathedral. Later, during the events that lead to the downfall of Communism in their country, St. Stanisłaus served as an important unifying and inspirational figure for the Polish people.
His feast day is May 7.
