St. Martin de Porres, the illegitimate son of a Spanish knight and a Panamanian mother, was born in Lima, Peru in 1579. He was rejected by his father because he inherited his mother's dark features, and subsequently was raised in poverty. He joined the Dominicans when he was fifteen years old, and became well known for his care of the sick, the poor, and orphans. People sought him out because of his great powers of healing and deep spiritual wisdom. Despite his many gifts, Martin lived a very humble and prayerful life. He died in 1639 and was canonized by Saint John XXIII in 1962.
“The example of Martin's life is ample evidence that we can strive for holiness and salvation as Christ Jesus has shown us: first, by loving God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind; and second, by loving your neighbor as yourself."
—Saint John XXIII at the Mass of canonization
Peru, 1579-1639.
His feast day is November 3.
