Collection: Victory of Truth over Heresy

ARTIST: Museum Religious Art Classics

ARTWORK NARRATIVE:

Artist: Peter Paul Rubens – c. 1625

Truth led by Time points to the lettering “Hoc est corpus meum” [This is my body], the words pronounced during the mass when, according to Catholic doctrine, the bread is miraculously transformed into the flesh of Christ. The dragon is a symbol of Evil, as are other figures in the scene (among them are John Calvin, Martin Luther and figures representing Muslims, Jews, and Protestants). In the foreground a cunning fox, a symbol of Heresy, is defeated by a noble lion.
