Near the hill at Tepeyac, Juan Diego (his Aztec name, Cuautlatohuac) opens his tilma (his workers cloak) to show Bishop Zumarraga the gift the lady had given him. These were roses growing miraculously in December. The lady’s special request made in his native Nahuatl language, arranged by her in his tilma, was to prove to the bishop that she had visited Juan and asked that a church be built on Tepeyac. It is the exact moment the bishop observed the real miracle: as the roses fell away, Mary’s image was on the tilma!
