In 1531, Our Lady appeared in Mexico to a peasant named Juan Diego. She called herself “The Mother of the True God that Gives Life.” She appeared as a Mexican Indian princess and asked Juan to tell the Bishop to build a church where she appeared. The Bishop asked for a sign that she was from God. In response, she made roses bloom in mid-winter and then arranged them in Juan's tilma to take to the Bishop. They weren't just any roses though – they were dark pink Castillion roses, that only grew in the Bishop's home back in Spain.
